About the University of Leeds and Scholarship

The University of Leeds, located in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, traces its roots back to 1874 when it was established as the Yorkshire College of Science. In 1884, it merged with the Leeds School of Medicine, founded in 1831, and was subsequently named Yorkshire College. The university became part of the federal Victoria University in 1887, joining Owens College (later the University of Manchester) and University College Liverpool (later the University of Liverpool). King Edward VII granted a royal charter to the University of Leeds in 1904.

As the eleventh-largest university in the United Kingdom by total enrollment, the University of Leeds attracts over 67,000 undergraduate applications annually, ranking as the fifth-most popular university in the UK by application volume, following Manchester, Edinburgh, University College London, and King’s College London. In the fiscal year 2021–22, Leeds recorded an income of £924.7 million, with £177.3 million sourced from research grants and contracts. The university’s financial endowments amount to £87.4 million (2022), positioning it among the top twenty British universities by financial endowment.

In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework, Leeds achieved joint 20th place (alongside the University of Exeter) among multi-faculty institutions in the UK for the quality (GPA) of its research. Additionally, it secured the 8th position for Research Power, a metric that combines a university’s grade point average score with the full-time equivalent number of researchers submitted.
